Prehabilitation for Surgery in Edmonton

Most People Go Into Surgery Unprepared

Before surgery, most people stop moving. Pain gets worse, strength drops, and uncertainty builds. By the time surgery arrives, you're weaker than when you were scheduled. Then recovery starts from that low point. You didn't choose this timeline, but you're facing a long recovery because no one showed you how to prepare your body while you waited.
  • Waiting for surgery often means losing strength, mobility, and confidence when your body needs them most.
  • Going into surgery weak means starting recovery from a deficit, extending time before you regain independence.
  • Prehabilitation gives you control over preparation, building strength and reducing fear before surgery even begins.

Your Recovery Starts Before Surgery

strength before surgery

Most people wait passively for surgery. We prepare actively for it. Prehabilitation builds the strength, movement control, and confidence your body needs to handle surgery and start recovery from a higher baseline. When you go in stronger, everything after surgery gets easier.

Replace fear with control by preparing your body, understanding the process, and entering surgery ready.

Prehabilitation Programs by Surgery Type

targeted preparation

Your surgery determines how we prepare your body. Knee replacements need different training than shoulder repairs. Hip surgery preparation differs from ACL reconstruction. Each program targets the specific muscles, movements, and strength patterns your surgery and recovery depend on.

Knee Replacement

Targeted strength and movement training before knee replacement to improve walking, reduce recovery time, and help you go into surgery stronger and more confident prepared.

Hip Replacement

Prehabilitation for hip replacement focused on strength, balance, and mobility to support faster recovery, better movement, and greater confidence before surgery with personalized kinesiologist-led programming.

ACL Surgery Prehab

ACL surgery prehab designed to restore strength, control, and confidence before reconstruction, setting the foundation for smoother rehab and a stronger return to sport safely.

Rotator Cuff

Rotator cuff prehabilitation builds shoulder strength and mobility before surgery to protect healing tissues, reduce setbacks, and support a more confident recovery with guided movement.

Shoulder Surgery

Prehabilitation for shoulder surgery improves strength, movement quality, and confidence before your procedure, helping you recover more smoothly and regain daily function after surgery ends.

Custom Pre-op Plan

Custom pre-operation plans tailored to your surgery, timeline, and pain level, providing targeted preparation when your needs don’t fit a standard program or typical protocol.

Your Prehab Trainer

Hi, I’m Rob Appleton, a registered kinesiologist with over 15 years in movement science and training. I’ve seen firsthand how pre-surgery preparation speeds recovery.

I started my journey at the University of Lethbridge Department of Kinesiology & Physical Education, where I earned my BSc in Kinesiology. What I learned there shaped how I work today: movement isn’t just exercise—it’s the foundation for health, performance, and long-term pain prevention.

Surgery is stressful. Waiting for it while your body gets weaker adds fear and uncertainty. Prehabilitation gives you something to control during that wait. I’ve guided people through this process many times, and the ones who prepare their bodies before surgery recover faster and regain independence sooner.

At Apex, I use movement assessments and kinesiology to build programs that match your surgery type, pain level, and timeline. We prepare the muscles and movements your recovery depends on before surgery makes training harder.

Let’s get your body ready for what’s ahead.
